Nutella brings back many memories. Nutella as a treat: spread on a piece of crusty bread when I was a kid. Nutella as comfort food: with a spoon, straight from the jar, when I lived in Paris and sometimes longed for home. Nutella as a delicious smell: when Rob and I were in Alba and the intense smell of the Ferrero factory surrounded the whole town. Nutella as a guilty pleasure: today with these NUTELLA cookies that are a treat to share with your Valentine!
These buttery and fragrant Nutella cookies are relatively easy to make, and as you cozy up and bake them, a decadent vanilla scent will envelop your kitchen. The ingredients are simple: just flour, sugar, egg, vanilla and salt – and of course Nutella. Nutella is the glue that holds the two cookie hearts together, and its deliciousness perfectly matches the simplicity of the cookies.

How to make Nutella Cookies
Start by sifting the flour and forming a volcano shape on your countertop. Add the cold butter (cut into chunks) to the center of the crater. Work the ingredients very briskly until they crumble together. My tip to prevent the butter from melting on contact with your hands is to keep your hands cold, either under cold running water or by rubbing some ice cubes in your hands.
Add the sugar, egg yolks, vanilla and salt and continue to process all the ingredients until perfectly combined. Place the dough in the fridge and let it rest for 1 hour. This resting time is the secret to perfect shortbread dough that is easy to roll out and work with.
Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to a ¼-inch thickness. Continue by cutting out as many shapes as you can with heart-shaped cookie cutters. On half of the cookies you get, make a smaller heart imprint with a smaller heart-shaped cookie cutter. This will give you a cookie with a heart hole.
Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper, place the cookies on it and bake in the oven at 320°F (160°C) for 8-10 minutes until golden. My tip: Turn the tray clockwise halfway through the baking time, this way the cookies will be nice and evenly golden.
Let the cookies cool on a baking rack. Once cool, sprinkle the cookies with heart hole with powdered sugar and spread some Nutella on the other cookies.
Place the cookie with hole on top of the whole cookie so you have 2 heart shaped cookies that have a Nutella filled heart.
Nutella Cookies variations
A few possible variations are:
– Pulverize some hazelnuts and add them to the sifted flour. Nutella main ingredients are hazelnuts.
– Change the shape, you can make them round, start or any of your favorite shape.
– If you prefer, you can have jam filling, raspberries, strawberries, or any flavor you like would be great.
Nutella Cookies storage suggestions
These cookies keep well for 3-4 days in an airtight container…of course, if they last that long!
Which wine to pair with Nutella Cookies
I suggest pairing these cookies with a Recioto della Valpolicella from Verona. This red wine is sweet, bold and rich, with chocolatey notes that pair well with the buttery cookies.
